Affordable & Accurate Driver License Translation Services

A certified driver's license translation is a word-for-word rendering of both sides of your license card, every name, date, license number, class, restriction, endorsement, stamp and seal, delivered with a signed certificate of accuracy on Vanan Services letterhead. The translator signs a statement that the translation is complete and accurate and that they are competent in both languages; that is what United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) requires. Some motor vehicle offices also require an independent translator; check the receiving office's rules.

We translate foreign driver's licenses into English for use in the United States, and United States driver's licenses into other languages for use abroad. The term "driving licence" is the usual one in the UK, Ireland, India and Australia; we translate these licences when the receiving authority requires it, preserving the original document's classifications, restrictions and identifying details.

When your translated license is submitted with birth certificates, marriage certificates, or other supporting records, our vital document translations help maintain consistency across the complete set of paperwork.

Vanan Services is a member company of the American Translators Association (ATA). Each license is assigned to a translator by language pair and reviewed before the certificate is signed.

Certified driver's license translation starts at $45 per page for orders of 1–5 pages, which is the tier a single license falls into. The rate is $35 per page for 6–15 pages and $25 per page on orders of 16+ pages. The certificate of translation is included at no charge; notarization is $15 per page. Call 1-800-230-7918 or chat for a quote that confirms the price and delivery date before work starts. Enjoy discounts on bulk orders when translating multiple licenses or documents. We also offer special rates for students and non-profit organizations.

Certified, notarized, sworn or apostille: which one does the receiving office want?

  • Certified translation (included): the standard deliverable described above, with the signed certificate of accuracy. The ATA explains that in the United States any competent translator may certify a translation; no government license is involved.
  • Notarized translation ($15 per page, service charge included; $5 for each additional certificate): a notary public witnesses the signature on the certificate. USCIS does not require it; a few state offices and some foreign authorities do. Our notaries are in New York, New Jersey and Virginia. See notarized translation services.
  • Sworn translation: for countries that run a sworn-translator system (Spain, Italy, France, Germany and others), where the receiving authority wants a translator officially appointed or authorized under that country's rules; the requirements differ by country. See sworn translation services.
  • Apostille ($100 for the first certificate, $10 for each additional one): an authentication of the notarized certificate for use in countries that are party to the Hague Apostille Convention. Ask for it when a foreign licensing authority or embassy requires one; we obtain it for you.

Certified Driver License Translation Services for All

Whether you need a translation of your driving license, an International Driving Permit (IDP), or both, depends on the country or state and on what you are doing there. A certified translation is the document that licensing offices, immigration services, insurers and employers file; an IDP is a separate booklet for driving abroad.

In the United States, a certified English translation of a foreign license may be asked for by a licensing office, an insurer, an employer or an immigration filing; abroad, a certified translation of a United States license may be asked for when converting it to a local license. Which document each office wants is set out below under the state requirements.

For individuals facing urgent travel, relocation, or licensing requirements, our same-day translations help keep important plans on schedule without unnecessary delays.

We have a team of professional translators who can accurately translate your driving license and certify the document for accuracy and quality. We ensure complete formatting and layout retention, keeping your translated license visually consistent with the original. Not every provider does this; some deliver a plain text rendering without the card layout.

What does your state DMV require for a foreign driver's license translation?

Requirements differ by state and by purpose. Many state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices accept a word-for-word certified English translation of the whole license, front and back, with a signed certificate of accuracy from an independent translator; others require their own certificate form, a translator from their approved list, or a translation certified by a government body. Check the page of the office you are visiting before you order, and tell us which office it is so the certificate is prepared in the format that office accepts.

  • New York: for a road test, the New York State DMV accepts either an International Driving Permit or a translation that it describes as certified by a consulate, the United States Department of State, or another official government agency, showing the license's expiry date and the vehicle classes it covers (NY DMV, Drivers from Other Countries). Our certificate of accuracy is an agency certification, not a government one, so for a New York road test confirm with the DMV whether it is accepted or obtain a consulate certification; for other New York filings, ask the office which document it wants. Our guide to getting a foreign driver's license translated for the New York DMV walks through the steps.
  • New Jersey: the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) requires a certified English translation of a foreign-language license and accepts three routes: a translation issued by a government entity, one signed and sealed by a qualified translator, or one certified by a competent person over 18 using the elements in its sample certificate, with the original and the translation attached (NJ MVC certified translation guidance). We prepare the certificate in that format; read how it worked for a German license holder in our NJ MVC real story.
  • Massachusetts: the Registry of Motor Vehicles accepts translations from language service providers when the translation and its certification meet the RMV's stated requirements (certifier's letterhead, name, date, contact details, qualifications, signature and a completeness statement); the RMV also provides a Translation Certification Format template (Massachusetts RMV translation certification requirements).
  • Nevada and other approved-list states: the Nevada DMV accepts translations only from translators on its own approved list, each with a DMV-issued translator number, and the list is closed to new applications (Nevada DMV approved translators). If your state runs a list of this kind, order from a translator on it.

Before the appointment: check your licensing office's own list. Depending on the state and the purpose, you may need your valid original license, an International Driving Permit or a certified translation the office accepts, and the identity, legal presence and residency documents it names. Some offices keep the translation, so order a second printed copy if you will need one again.

Need for Certified Driver's License Translation Service

Courts, licensing offices, insurers and employers may ask for a certified translation of a foreign driver's license so that they can read the licence classes, dates and restrictions. What each one requires depends on the receiving organisation and the purpose.

You may require a certified translation of your driving license in these situations:

Exchanging a foreign license for a state license or taking a road test after moving, where the licensing office files the translation with your application. Applying for a job that involves driving, including a commercial driver's license (CDL) role, where the employer verifies your license history. Settling in another country, where residency paperwork lists the license among your identity documents; a license filed with a United States immigration application needs a full English translation with the translator's certification, as our USCIS certified translation page explains. Our translators follow strict glossary and terminology consistency so that classes, restrictions and dates read the same way across every document in your file.

Many international students studying a course in a foreign country might also require certified translation services based on their regional languages; university international offices often tell students to use an independent translator rather than translate the license themselves. If you're planning to visit a foreign country, a rental company or local police may ask for a translation, an International Driving Permit, or both, depending on the destination.

In addition to your driving license, if you need insurance documents translated for your stay in another country, we offer affordable and accurate insurance document translation services. Some insurers in the United States may ask for a translated license when they review a new policy for a driver licensed abroad.

Call our professionals to translate licenses anywhere in the U.S., or upload both sides of the card online and receive the certified PDF by email, with a printed copy by mail or Midtown pickup if your office wants paper.

Translator reviewing an international driver's license translation

International Driver License Translation for Driving Abroad

Some countries require a visiting driver to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside the home license, and requirements vary by destination (United States citizens driving in Canada or Mexico, for example, do not need one), so check the destination's rule before you travel. For holders of a valid United States license, a United States-issued IDP is available through the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA); it is valid for one year, is carried with the original license, and is not a license on its own. Drivers licensed elsewhere obtain an IDP from the authorized issuer in their own licensing country.

A certified international driver license translation is the document a receiving authority may ask for when you exchange a license, apply for residency, or take a driving job abroad, and in the reverse direction when a foreign license holder settles in the United States. Whether a translation, an IDP, or both are needed depends on the destination and the purpose.

Vanan Services is an ATA member company. Our ATA translators page explains what company membership means and how translators are assigned to international driving license work by language pair.

We can translate international driving licenses into different languages, including

Chinese driver license translation covers mainland and Taiwan licenses in Simplified or Traditional script, and we also translate Hindi, Tagalog and Haitian Creole licenses into English. Our translations are available in over 100 languages, with the information on the card kept exactly as issued: names, numbers and dates are never altered, only rendered.

Our support is available round-the-clock to take a quick driver's license translation online.

Secure & Quick Translation of Foreign Driver's License

Government and police departments expect a foreign driver's license translation to be complete and exact. Where a receiving country runs a sworn-translator system, we provide sworn translations; where an office asks for a notary's witness, we notarize the certificate.

We translate foreign driving licenses into English for immigration and licensing files, and translate a native driving license into a foreign language for people moving, working or driving overseas.

We also offer Haitian Creole, Spanish, Russian, Bengali, Polish, and Italian Translation Services in New York to assist with international driver license translations in multiple languages.

Our translators sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), files are transferred securely, and access is limited to the team assigned to your order.

We deliver urgent driver's license translations through rush delivery within 2 to 24 hours, with the delivery time confirmed in your quote. Each translation undergoes quality checks and proofreading to ensure accuracy and completeness. Your license is assigned to a translator working in that language pair and script, so classes, restrictions and place names are rendered the way the receiving office reads them. Call us today to get your driving license translated.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we get every day, answered straight. No fluff.

For United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) filings we prepare a complete English translation of both sides with the translator's signed certification, which is what USCIS requires. State motor vehicle requirements vary: many offices accept a certified translation from an independent translator, and some require their own form, a translator from their approved list, or a government-certified translation. Confirm the receiving office's rule before ordering and tell us which office it is.
Yes. Every field is translated, including categories, restrictions, and endorsements on the back, with the card layout mirrored. License numbers, dates and the issuing authority are copied exactly as printed; stamps and seals are described where they are not legible.
A certified driver's license translation starts at $45 per page for orders of 1–5 pages, which is where a single license, front and back, falls. The rate is $35 per page for 6–15 pages and $25 per page on orders of 16+ pages. The certificate of accuracy is included; notarization is $15 per page, a printed copy by mail is $25 per order, and a 5% transaction fee applies to the subtotal. Your quote lists the total before you approve it.
A single license is delivered from 1 business day, depending on the language and how legible your scan is. Rush delivery within 2 to 24 hours is available when a road test, interview or filing date is close. Tell us the deadline and the quote confirms the delivery time.
No. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a booklet you obtain from an authorized issuer in your home country before you travel, and it is carried with your license. A certified translation is a separate document that licensing offices, immigration services, insurers and employers file with your application. Depending on the destination and the purpose you may need an IDP, a certified translation, or both; neither document on its own grants permission to drive.
No. Whether you may drive on a foreign license, and for how long, is set by the state you are in. The translation is what the state office, insurer or employer reads when your license is not in English. In New York, for example, the DMV asks a road-test applicant with a non-English license for either an International Driving Permit or a translation it describes as certified by a consulate, the United States Department of State or another official government agency.
100+ languages into English, and United States licenses into other languages for use abroad. Language pairs we handle include Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, Tagalog and Haitian Creole into English. For a less common pair, send the license and we confirm availability right away.
Yes. Fields appear in the original positions so officials can match the card and translation line by line. The translated document follows the original card's field order and layout, with non-text elements identified where relevant.
Digital delivery by email with the signed certificate of accuracy is available on every order. Some licensing offices want a printed translation with a wet-ink signature, and some keep it. We mail a printed copy for $25 per order, or you can collect it at our Midtown Manhattan office. Ask your office which it wants before you order.
Yes. Notarization is $15 per page with the service charge included, and $5 for each additional certificate; our notaries are in New York, New Jersey and Virginia. An apostille, for countries that require one, is $100 for the first certificate and $10 for each additional one. Tell us the destination country and receiving authority when you order and we prepare the right combination.
We follow the details printed on the license and use your passport spelling for name transliteration where the license is in another script, so the license, passport and certificates in your file read the same way. Any discrepancy between the two documents is flagged to you for review rather than changed silently. Send the passport spelling with your order.
Upload clear photos or scans of both sides of the license and tell us the receiving office and the destination language. We deliver the completed translation and its certification in the agreed format; check the receiving office's requirements before you submit. You get the price and delivery time in writing before anything starts, and support is available 24/7 if plans change.
