I was delighted with the quality of the translation and especially with the incredibly quick turnaround. I was in government offices, suddenly realized I needed a foreign language document officially translated, and Vanan had it back to me within an hour.
Readily available, helpful, and professional customer service. I had all my questions answered and my translation ordered within 20 minutes of accessing the webpage, and all via online chat. In an era of online chatbots, it was a pleasure to have a clear, efficient, communication with a human being. Aaron was excellent.

Very friendly service from start to finish. I needed a certain part of my divorce decree translated and they went above and beyond to ensure I was satisfied with the final result. Also, I forgot to mention that they delivered way earlier than I expected. I highly recommend them :)))
What is a certified death certificate translation?
A certified death certificate translation is a complete, word-for-word rendering of the certificate, including its seals, stamps, registrar signature and any handwritten entries, delivered with a signed certificate of translation.
In it the translator or the translation company states that the translation is complete and accurate and that the translator is competent in both languages, and signs it with a name, contact details and the date.
According to the American Translators Association (ATA), anyone in the United States may certify a translation, so what the receiving office checks is that the statement is present, signed and attached to a full translation.
The certificate of translation is included with every Vanan Services order at no charge; the same format applies to the other civil records in an estate or immigration file, as our vital document translation page explains.
A single certificate is priced at $45 per page (the 1–5 page tier); orders of 6–15 pages are from $35 per page and orders of 16+ pages from $25 per page.
One page is up to 250 words, the tier rate applies to the whole order, and the certificate of translation is included. Standard delivery is from 1 business day for a one-page certificate, and 1–8 business days for up to 10 pages, depending on the language. Rush delivery within 2 to 24 hours. Call 1-800-230-7918 or upload the certificate for a quote that confirms the price and the delivery date before work starts.
A notarized death certificate translation adds a notary's acknowledgment of the signature on the certificate of translation, for $15 per page and $5 for each additional certificate, witnessed by a notary in New York, New Jersey or Virginia; some courts, consulates and foreign registrars ask for it, and USCIS does not. Every order goes through our four-stage review (translate, edit, proofread, quality check), and our translations achieve 99+% accuracy. Vanan Services is a member company of the ATA; our ATA translation page explains what the membership covers. Orders are assigned by language pair and by script, so the official death certificate translator on your file reads the source script natively.
A death certificate is the civil record of a person's death: the identifying details of the deceased, the date and place of death, and the registrar's entry, issued by a vital records office or civil registry; cause-of-death information appears on the certificate itself or on a separate medical certificate, depending on the jurisdiction and the certificate type. An estate administrator, an insurer, a pension fund, a bank, a court or an immigration office may ask for the record, and when it was issued in another language the office may require a translation for a death certificate that it can read line by line against the original. A death record translation service renders every field present, including any cause-of-death entry and the registrar's annotations, as a complete translation that accompanies the official record; it does not replace it.
When seeking certified legal translation services, it's important to ensure that your documents are accepted by legal authorities, avoiding potential delays.
Certified, notarized, sworn or apostilled: which version does your recipient want?
| Type | What it is | Who usually asks for it | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Certified translation | The full translation plus the signed certificate of translation | USCIS, probate courts, banks, insurers, pension funds, universities | Included in the per-page rate |
| Notarized translation | A notary public acknowledges the signature on the certificate of translation; the notary does not check the translation | Some state courts, consulates and foreign registrars. USCIS does not require it | $15 per page; $5 for each additional certificate |
| Sworn translation | A translation made under the destination country's rules: an officially appointed translator in some countries, a translator's oath before a court official or notary in others | Spain, Italy, France, Germany and other civil-law countries, for a death registered or an estate settled there | Quoted per country |
| Apostille | A certificate from the competent authority in the place the death certificate or the notarization was issued, verifying the signature or seal for use in Hague Apostille Convention countries; it says nothing about the translation | Foreign registrars, courts and consulates, when they require it for a U.S. certificate used abroad | $100 for the first certificate; $10 for each additional one |
An apostille is issued by the competent public authority of the place where the certificate or the notarization was made, never by a translation company. When the receiving authority wants the apostille on the original certificate, it must be on the certificate before translation, so that the apostille page is translated with the record; when it wants the apostille on the notarized translation, the translation and notarization come first. We arrange the apostille as a paid service ($100 for the first certificate, $10 for each additional one). Tell us the destination and we confirm the order of steps before you pay.
Certified copy or certified translation?
A certified copy is an official duplicate of the death record issued by the vital records office or registrar that holds it. A certified translation is our rendering of that record into another language with the signed statement attached. A clear scan is enough for us to prepare the translation; the receiving institution decides whether your submission needs the original record, a certified copy or an electronic copy alongside the certified translation. We do not issue certified copies; order those from the registrar, then send us the copy or scan.

How are the cause of death and the other fields on a death certificate translated?
Every field is translated as written, and nothing is summarised or left out. The cause of death draws the most questions: it is rendered with the standard English term for the condition the certifier named, medical abbreviations and diagnosis codes are preserved as recorded, with a clearly marked translator's note where clarification is needed, because the insurer, court or registrar reading the translation compares it against the original line by line. Where a country issues the medical certificate of cause of death as a separate page, that page is translated with the certificate.
Names are rendered faithfully from the record and, where a non-Latin script is involved, transliterated with the passport spelling you supply as the reference; any difference between the certificate and your other documents is flagged to you before delivery.
Dates keep their original values, with the day, month and year made explicit where the source format could be misread. Registrar stamps, embossed seals, signatures and marginal notes are labelled in position, and a handwritten entry that cannot be read with confidence is queried with you rather than guessed.
Our team keeps a glossary for each language pair so that the terms on a death certificate, a birth certificate and a marriage certificate in the same file match, and our document translation service applies the same glossary to the will, the letters of administration or the insurance policy that travels with the record. Every order is reviewed for glossary and terminology consistency before the certificate of translation is signed.
Which fields of a death certificate are translated?
The fields recorded on a death certificate vary by issuing jurisdiction and certificate type. We translate every field present, which may include:
- Full name of the deceased and any former names
- Date and place of birth, age, sex and marital status
- Date, time and place of death
- Cause and manner of death as certified, with any diagnosis code copied unchanged
- Certifying physician or coroner and the date certified
- Informant's name and relationship to the deceased
- Place and method of disposition and the funeral home
- Registrar's name, registration number and date of registration
- Amendments, marginal notes, seals, stamps, signatures and any apostille page
Death certificates are translated for:
- Immigration and Visa Applications
- Settling Estates and Legal Matters
- Financial Account Closures
- Life Insurance Claims
- Repatriation of Remains
- Social Security and Tax Purposes
- Genealogical Research and Historical Records
- Marriage and Remarriage Documentation
- Academic and Statistical Research
A single death often has to be proved in more than one country: the estate in one, a pension or an insurance policy in another, a citizenship application in a third. A certified translation, delivered as a PDF, may serve more than one filing; each receiving authority decides whether it requires a signed printed copy, notarization, an apostille or another submission format. When an office wants a signed printed set, an extra printed translation is $10 per copy of 1–10 pages and an extra printed certificate of translation is $5 per copy, with mailed delivery priced separately.

Financial Matters Simplified with Death Certificate Translation Services
Banks, insurers and pension funds may request a death certificate before closing an account, paying a claim or updating benefit records, and when the certificate was issued abroad they may request a certified English translation with it for an estate or benefits claim. Our financial document translation services cover the statements, policy schedules and account-closure forms that travel with the record, and our insurance translation service handles the life-insurance claim pack itself. The Social Security Administration (SSA) is the exception: its procedure for foreign-language documents (POMS GN 00301.330) states that when a foreign-language document is submitted, "we will have it translated", so a survivor filing for benefits does not need to order a translation for SSA unless an office asks for one. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and state tax offices deal with the executor or personal representative; where the deceased's accounts or the court appointment were abroad, the death record and the appointment are translated together, with their details preserved and any discrepancy between them flagged to you. We keep the original formatting and layout of the certificate so each translated field sits where the reader expects it.
Utility providers, phone and subscription services and property registries abroad may also request proof of death; where a translation is required, we prepare the death record for that receiving office. Genealogists and family historians order translations of older civil death records too; handwritten entries and obsolete terms are translated with a note wherever the reading is uncertain, and our translators keep the integrity of each record rather than modernising it.

Funeral Arrangements Made Easier with Accurate Translation Services
A death certificate is part of the paperwork for a funeral and for the international repatriation of remains, and when the death occurred abroad, or the burial will take place abroad, officials on both sides must be able to read it; which other documents are required depends on the destination, the carrier and the authorities involved. Our funeral document translation covers the death certificate, the burial or cremation permit, the embalming certificate and the transit permit as one set with one glossary, so terminology stays consistent while any difference between the original records is preserved and flagged. Rush delivery within 2 to 24 hours for the certificate; the exact time depends on the page count, the language and the legibility of the source. Files are handled under a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) on request and transferred securely, and you can choose digital and physical copy delivery: a PDF by email, a printed copy by mail for $25 per order, or both.
Repatriation of remains follows the rules of the destination country and the carrier; the death certificate and the permits are usually required in the language of that country, and a consulate may ask for a notarized or apostilled version.
If a document in the set is missing, unreadable or inconsistent with the certificate, we tell you before translation starts, so the funeral home is not waiting on a correction. Each document is prepared according to the filing specifications you give us for the receiving office.
How much does translation cost?
Death certificates and the other vital records in an estate or immigration file are priced per page, and the rate depends on the size of the order. A one-page certificate falls in the 1–5 page tier at $45 per page; orders of 6–15 pages are from $35 per page and orders of 16+ pages from $25 per page. The certificate of translation is included at every tier.
| Order size* | Death certificates & vital recordsDeath, birth and marriage certificates, registry and court recordsStarting price per page |
|---|---|
| 1–5 pages (including a single certificate) | $45/page |
| 6–15 pages | $35/page |
| 16+ pages | $25/page |
*One page = up to 250 words. A one-page death certificate counts as one page; a long-form certificate with a separate medical certificate page or an apostille page is billed on its page count. The rate for the tier applies to the whole order.

What do USCIS and consulates require from a death certificate translation?
USCIS requires that any document in a foreign language be accompanied by a full English translation that the translator has certified as complete and accurate, together with the translator's certification that he or she is competent to translate from that language into English (8 CFR 103.2(b)(3)). For a death certificate that means:
- The entire document you submit, whether a full certificate or an official death-register extract, including the reverse side, stamps, seals and any apostille page; a summary or a partial translation of that document does not meet the rule
- The translator's signed certification of completeness, accuracy and competence; USCIS does not require notarization
- A copy of the original certificate filed with the translation, as the form instructions ask (our practice, not a word of the regulation)
A death certificate is filed with USCIS to show that a prior marriage ended by death, for example with a Form I-130 petition or a Form I-485 application, to support a Form I-360 petition as the widow or widower of a U.S. citizen, or when a petitioner or sponsor has died. The regulation does not expressly prohibit a family member from translating; an independent translator provides a separate certification, which may help where impartiality could be questioned, and the officer reviewing the case makes the final decision on every document in it. USCIS does not publish a list of approved translators: our USCIS certified translation service prepares the certificate to the format the regulation describes, and whether a death certificate must accompany a visa or passport application depends on that agency's document checklist; when it does, the same certified translation serves. We also handle handwritten document translation for older civil-registry certificates.
When a U.S. citizen dies abroad, the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate may prepare a Consular Report of Death of a U.S. Citizen Abroad (CRODA) after receiving the foreign death certificate or another official finding of death, and the Department of State says the CRODA can be used in the United States to settle estate matters; the foreign certificate itself still needs a certified translation for the offices that ask for it. In the other direction, a consulate may request an embassy death certificate translation when it registers the death of one of its nationals who died in the United States; foreign courts and registrars handling an estate may also ask for the U.S. certificate translated into their language, sometimes with an apostille, depending on their requirements. Death certificates of parents and grandparents are translated for citizenship-by-descent applications in the same way, where the consulate compares names and dates across every generation's records. Legal offices also request adoption papers translation alongside death certificates to settle inheritance and guardianship matters.
What should you send us for a death certificate translation?
A clear scan or phone photo of every page of the certificate, and the name of the office the translation is going to. With those we prepare the quote; the final price and delivery date are confirmed once we have checked the page count, the legibility and the language. The checklist:
- The recipient: USCIS, a named probate court, an insurer, a consulate or a foreign registrar, so we use that office's format and add notarization or an apostille only if it asks for one
- The separate medical certificate of cause of death, where your country issues one, if the recipient wants the cause of death
- A legible image: stamps, seals and handwritten entries must be readable; a PDF, JPG or PNG from a phone is fine
- Any amendment or correction issued after registration, so it is translated with the certificate
- The spelling of each name on the passport or the immigration form, which we use as a reference: names are rendered faithfully from the record, and any difference is flagged to you
- Every page, front and back, when the reverse carries a stamp, a registrar's note or an apostille
- Whether the recipient wants the short-form certificate or the long form with the cause of death; if you are unsure, confirm with the receiving office and send us the version it names
We also translate the related records a receiving authority may ask for with the certificate: coroner's reports, medical examiner's reports and civil-registry death extracts. You receive the certified translation as a PDF by email, with a signed printed copy by mail if you order one. The original stays with you. Faded or handwritten civil-registry certificates are reviewed for legibility before we quote, and anything we cannot read is queried with you rather than guessed.
Death Certificate Translation in 100+ Languages for Global Use
At Vanan Services, we translate death certificates to and from Danish, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, Finnish, Hindi, Tagalog, Haitian Creole and any other language you need.
A death certificate translated into English for a U.S. court, bank or immigration office is delivered with the certificate of translation; a U.S. certificate translated from English for use abroad is delivered in the format the foreign registrar or consulate specifies, by native translators of that language. We also translate birth certificates and marriage certificates from the same family file, so that names, places and dates are rendered consistently, with any difference in the source records flagged rather than changed.
Banks and registries abroad set their own submission deadlines for closing an account or registering a death. Confirm the deadline with the receiving institution and tell us when you need the translation.
Misinterpretations in translations can lead to legal disputes or financial complications. Our services prioritize clarity and precision to ensure hassle-free account settlements. We also support divorce certificate translation for clients who need accurate marital status documentation when handling estate or financial settlements across jurisdictions.
Death Certificate Translation for Probate and Estate Matters
Meeting legal requirements with a certified death certificate translation usually starts with the court: when a foreign-language death certificate is submitted for probate or an estate-related asset transfer, the receiving court may require a certified translation, and ours preserves the record's details for review alongside the original, according to the court's filing instructions. Our team prepares death certificate translation for court cases, inheritance claims and probate court filings according to the filing specifications you provide, with the four-stage review on every order, and we offer discounts on bulk orders for law firms and estate administrators translating a set of records. When a probate court or a foreign registrar requires notarization, it is added at $15 per page.
Some jurisdictions require dual-language death certificates for legal purposes, especially in regions with multiple official languages. Proper translations ensure compliance with these complex requirements. Our team specializes in dual-language document translations, maintaining accuracy and format integrity.
Our same-day certified translation option is designed for situations where multilingual documentation must be submitted within strict legal or administrative deadlines.
Rush Translation of Death Certificates for Time-Sensitive Needs
Standard delivery is from 1 business day for a one-page certificate, and 1–8 business days for up to 10 pages, depending on the language. When a burial permit, a court date or an interview is closer than that, order rush: Rush delivery within 2 to 24 hours, with the exact time based on the page count, the language and the legibility of the source. Our 24 hour translation services page explains how a rush order is scheduled; the quote confirms the delivery time before work starts, and the four-stage review is not shortened for a rush order. Files are processed securely and in confidence.
Pension providers and insurers set their own submission requirements and deadlines, which the applicant confirms before filing, and a certified translation can be the last missing document in the set. Our certified translation services cover the death certificate and every other record in the claim, so the requested documents can be translated together in one order.
Case Study: English-to-Spanish Death Certificate Translation Services
Client Information
Industry: Immigration Law
Location: California, USA
File Information
File Type & Length: 2-page PDF death certificate
Goal
The client required a fully certified, ready-for-submission translation of an official death certificate from English into Spanish. The translated document needed to meet both U.S. government and foreign consulate specifications for use in probate proceedings and visa applications.
Key Challenges
- Complex Legal Terminology: Precise rendering of legal and medical terms was essential to preserve the document’s legal validity.
- Handwritten Entries: Portions of the certificate included cursive annotations and signatures that were difficult to decipher.
- Certification Requirements: The translation had to include an attestation statement, translator’s signature, and notarization to satisfy strict regulatory guidelines.
Delivery Time
Project Duration: 2 weeks
Strategy
- Specialized Linguist Assignment: Engaged a translator with expertise in both legal Spanish and U.S. legal terminology.
- Glossary Development: Compiled a mini-glossary of critical terms (e.g., “cause of death,” “registrar,” “certified copy”) to ensure consistency.
- Dual-Phase Quality Assurance:
- Phase 1: In-depth peer review by a second certified translator.
- Phase 2: Notary verification and formatting check to align with consular standards.
Results
- Accepted on first submission: The certified translation passed consular review on first submission, avoiding resubmission delays.
- Streamlined Processing: Enabled the client’s legal team to advance probate and immigration cases without further documentation requests.
- Consistent terminology: The glossary and the two-phase review supported consistent terminology and formatting across the submitted documents.
